IEPs: Developing High-Quality Individualized Education Programs Practice Test

During the Evaluation step, the team gathers a complete picture of the student’s abilities and needs through a comprehensive, individualized assessment across all areas that could affect learning. This goes beyond just academic testing and includes cognitive abilities, academic skills, communication, social-emotional and behavioral functioning, motor skills, and functional performance, as well as health and environmental factors. A multidisciplinary team conducts the evaluation and uses multiple data sources—formal tests, observations, input from teachers and parents, and records—to build a thorough understanding of strengths and challenges. The purpose is to determine whether the student is eligible for special education and to identify the specific supports, services, and instructional strategies that will be needed, which then guide the subsequent IEP development and goals. Data collection and a broad scope are essential because they ensure the plan addresses all areas impacting learning, not just academics.
